DIN EN 1092-1 Standard Overview

DIN EN 1092-1 defines the types, dimensions, and materials for circular steel flanges used with European Standard pipes, valves, fittings, and other piping systems. The standard organizes flange selection around DN (Nominal Diameter) and PN (Nominal Pressure), ensuring that flanges manufactured by different suppliers remain dimensionally interchangeable when matched by DN and PN class.

Included are:

  • Standardized flange forms are identified by EN type designations (e.g., Type 1 (plate flange for welding), Type 12 (slip-on), Type 5 (blind), Type 11 (weld neck), Type 13 (threaded or companion), and lapped forms (Types 2, 4, and 32)).
  • A PN rating structure (commonly PN10, PN16, PN25) used to select standardized drilling and flange geometry for matching components.
  • DN is a reference size for matching and should not be confused with an exact measured ID/OD. Common DN sizes include DN25, DN40, DN50, DN80, DN100, DN150, and DN200 through DN1000+.
  • DN and PN-based dimensional requirements that define bolt patterns, bolt counts, and key geometry (OD, ID, thickness, and bolt circle).
  • Facing configurations used across installations, including Flat Face and Raised Face.

Common materials include:

  • Carbon steel (commonly specified for general industrial piping)
  • Stainless steel (commonly specified for corrosion resistance and process environments)
Typical Applications of DIN EN 1092-1
DIN/EN flanges are widely used in metric piping systems across Europe and in international industrial projects, including:
  • Water distribution and treatment systems
  • HVAC and utility piping
  • Compressed air and general plant service
  • Chemical and process piping
  • Industrial facilities and infrastructure projects

Standard DIN EN 1092-1 Pressure Classes

DIN/EN Pressure ClassTypical Pressure Range*Common Applications and Service Characteristics
PN10Low pressure (10 bar)Water distribution, HVAC water loops, irrigation, and utility lines where pressure margins are modest.
PN16General industrial (16 bar)Water treatment systems, moderate compressed air, and general plant/process piping where PN10 is insufficient.
PN25Higher duty (25 bar)More demanding compressed air service, higher-pressure steam/condensate segments, and chemical/process duties where PN16 is not sufficient.
PN40High pressure (40 bar)Higher-pressure process systems and industrial service where thicker flanges and stronger bolting are required.
PN63Very high pressure (63 bar)Specialized high-pressure industrial systems with stricter joint robustness requirements.
PN100Severe pressure (100 bar)Specialized high-pressure systems requiring tighter engineering controls and careful p/T verification.

* Note: PN values are nominal pressure designations in bar. Allowable working pressure varies by material group and operating temperature and must be verified against EN 1092-1 pressure/temperature (p/T) tables.

DIN EN 1092-1 Flange Types

At API International, our DIN flange production is focused primarily on

Type 01 plate (slip-on) flanges for welding are manufactured to the DIN EN 1092-1 specification. Type 01 flanges are widely used for general piping connections where ease of installation and alignment are important.

Type 01 flanges slip over the pipe and secured via fillet welds on both the inside diameter of the face side and the pipe end. This approach supports efficient installation while maintaining consistent bolt patterns and sealing geometry defined by EN 1092-1 tables.

Lapped Flanges

The ideal solution for systems requiring maximum alignment flexibility or frequent disassembly (EN Type 02 and Type 04). These flanges remain loose on the pipe, allowing for easy rotation during installation, making them the preferred choice for systems subject to repeated maintenance. To ensure a precise fit, the Type 02 flange is used in conjunction with Type 32 or 33 weld-on collars, while the Type 04 is specifically designed to accommodate the neck of a Type 34 weld-on collar.

Blind Flanges

Engineered to terminate or isolate piping systems during maintenance, pressure testing, or future expansion (EN Type 05). Designed to provide a secure, solid end-closure, these flanges are essential for sealing off flanged connections in high-pressure environments.

Weld Neck Flanges

Engineered for high-pressure, high-temperature, or cyclic services where optimal stress distribution and fatigue resistance are critical (EN Type 11). Featuring a tapered hub that transitions gradually to the pipe wall thickness, these flanges provide superior reinforcement and are frequently specified for the most demanding industrial process conditions.

Threaded Flanges

Designed for low-pressure piping systems where welding is either impractical or restricted due to site safety constraints (EN Type 13). These flanges feature a threaded bore allowing for a secure mechanical connection without the need for traditional welding. They are the ideal choice for small-diameter lines and environments where volatile risks or space limitations prohibit hot work.

Hubbed (Raised Face or Flat Face) Slip-On Flange for Welding

Engineered for low- to moderate-pressure services and share key design characteristics with ANSI/ASME B16.5 standards (EN Type 12). Manufactured from high-quality forged or cut plate raw materials, their integrated hub design simplifies alignment and installation. These flanges provide a versatile and economical alternative to weld-neck varieties across a wide range of industrial piping systems.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Frequently Asked
Questions

EN 1092-1 is the definitive European standard for circular steel pipe flanges. In addition to establishing dimensions and drilling patterns based on DN (Nominal Diameter) and PN (Nominal Pressure), the specification sets rigorous requirements for flange types, facing/sealing surfaces, and tolerances. It further ensures system integrity by mandating strict standards for threading, material composition, and permanent marking for traceability.

While North American industries primarily utilize AWWA, ANSI, and ASME standards, European and international industries rely on DIN (Metric) standards. While DIN flanges are available in familiar styles—including slip-on, weld-neck, and blind—their dimensions and pressure ratings are not interchangeable with ASME or ANSI counterparts. Because outer diameters, bolt patterns, bolt hole diameters, and pressure classes differ, DIN flanges must be paired with piping components that comply with the same metric standards to ensure a secure, leak-free fit.

There is no direct, one-to-one conversion between DIN and ANSI flange standards. Even in instances where bolt patterns may appear to align, critical disparities in pressure-temperature ratings, gasket seating geometries, and machining tolerances remain. While custom-machined adapters can facilitate a connection between European and North American systems, utilizing the correct DIN-standard components is the most efficient and reliable way to ensure system integrity.

DIN flanges are classified by PN (Pressure Nominal) ratings, which indicate the maximum pressure limit in bars at ambient temperature. Common ratings include PN10, PN16, and PN25. For reference, 1 bar is approximately 14.5 PSI; therefore, a PN16 flange is rated for a working pressure of roughly 232 PSI under standard conditions.
