Technical Specifications and Ratings

AWWA C207 Standard Overview

AWWA C207 is a standard for carbon steel ring flanges for waterworks service, providing guidelines for the design, materials, dimensions, and testing of flanges used in water systems. The C207 standard includes several classes of flanges (B,D,E, and F), each designed to handle different pressure ratings. These flanges are made from carbon steel (such as ASTM A36 or ASTM A105) and are designed to handle pressure requirements of waterworks systems in industrial applications. They are commonly used in pipelines, water treatment plants, pump stations, and other infrastructure projects.

Minimum Requirements for AWWA C207 Flange:

  • Materials & Fabrication: steel plate/forgings suitable for water service; machining tolerances; flat-face requirement for mating to waterworks equipment. Carbon steel (typically ASTM A36, STM A105, ASTM A516 Grades 60,65,70, ASTM A283 Grade C, Q235, or GB/T 700).
  • Performance: the standard uses class-based working pressure limits (see table below) sized for water utilities.
  • Design basis: AWWA C207 – Steel pipe flanges for waterworks service from 4″ to 144″ NPS
  • Interchangeability: for many sizes, AWWA bolt hole patterns (pressure classes B, D, and E) align with ASME Class 150 patterns; F pressure class aligns with ASME Class 300.

AWWA C207 Class Working Pressures

AWWA C207 covers steel ring and blind flanges ranging from 4” to 144”. These flanges are categorized into five pressure classes, each designed for a specific pressure range and application environment.

Class

Typical working pressure

Notes

B

up to 86 psi

Low-pressure distribution.

D

up to 175 psi (4–12 in),  up to 150 psi (>12 in)

The “standard” municipal choice.

E

up to 275 psi

Heavy-duty applications.

F

up to 300 psi

Highest pressure-rated AWWA class.

Common AWWA C207 Flange Types

A Slip On Flange is a type of pipe flange that is slipped over the end of a pipe and welded in place.

A Blind Flange is a detachable sealing device used to block off a pipeline or to create a stop.

Hub Ring Flanges are manufactured to AWWA C207 and ANSI #150 bolt pattern specifications.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Frequently Asked
Questions

An AWWA flange is a type of pipe flange designed for waterworks service. It follows standards developed by the American Water Works Association and is typically used in municipal pipelines, treatment plants, irrigation systems, and other applications up to 300 psi.

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) provides two main standards for flanges for water-work applications:

  • AWWA C207 –  carbon steel flanges

  • AWWA C228stainless steel flanges

These standards also define dimensions, drilling patterns, pressure ratings, and material properties.

AWWA C207 covers carbon steel flanges, while AWWA C228 covers stainless steel flanges for the same applications. Both define dimensions, pressure classes, and material requirements.

Pressure ratings vary by class:

  • Class A: up to 50 psi (Stainless Steel Only)
  • Class B: up to 86 psi
  • Class D: up to 175 psi
  • Class E: up to 275 psi
  • Class F: up to 300 psi

These ratings apply to water service and depend on flange size and material.

API International stocks the pipe sizes, pressure classes, and materials you need for your project.
