Class SF Specs & Dimensions

AWWA C228 Flanges Overview

AWWA C228 is the modern standard governing stainless steel pipe flanges for water service, providing rigorous guidelines for design, materials, and dimensions in both potable and non-potable systems. By utilizing high-grade, corrosion-resistant alloys—primarily 304/304L and 316/316L—these flanges offer superior durability in chemically aggressive, high-salinity, or high-humidity environments.

Minimum Requirements for AWWA C228 Flange:

  • Materials & fabrication: The standard “provides minimum material requirements and dimensions for a variety of stainless-steel flanges (typically ASTM A240, 304/304L, 316/316L, or duplex alloys)”
  • Corrosion Resistance: High resistance to oxidation, salt spray, and various chemical environments, ensuring a long service life in aggressive conditions.
  • Performance: Pressure ratings are equivalent to C207. C228 covers Class SA (50 PSI)
  • Design basis: AWWA C228 – Stainless steel flanges for corrosive environments, 2″ – 72″ (smaller sizes available when compared to C207)
  • Common Applications: Desalination, chemical plants, wastewater, marine systems, food-grade systems
  • Interchangeability: for many sizes, AWWA ring-flange drilling (pressure classes SA,SB, SD and SE) aligns with ASME Class 150 patterns; F pressure class aligns with ASME Class 300.

Class SF: Pressure Rating and Dimensional Basis

Class SF is the highest-pressure stainless steel waterworks flange class designed for severe-duty service with standardized drilling patterns:
  • Pressure capability: 300 psi at atmospheric temperature.
  • Dimensional compatibility: Class SF defines standardized bolt patterns and flange geometry for higher-pressure stainless steel service and is commonly used where corrosion resistance, structural strength, and dependable sealing are required in demanding environments.
* Class SF bolt-hole patterns align with ASME/ANSI Class 300 bolt patterns, but dimensional alignment does not mean pressure ratings are identical across standards. Pressure limits remain standard- and service-dependent.

AWWA C228 Class SF Stainless Steel-Ring Flange Dimensions

AWWA C228 defines the Class SF designation by size-based flange dimensions, including outside diameter, inside diameter, thickness, bolt circle, bolt-hole quantity, and hole diameter for stainless steel waterworks flanges.

AWWA C228 Class SF Flange Types

A Slip On Flange is a type of pipe flange that is slipped over the end of a pipe and welded in place.

A Blind Flange is a detachable sealing device used to block off a pipeline or to create a stop.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Frequently Asked
Questions

AWWA C228 Class SF flange dimensions are defined by nominal pipe size (NPS) and include outside diameter (OD), bolt circle (BC), number of bolt holes, hole diameter, and thickness.

Class SF flanges are typically available in sizes from 4” to 48” and follow drilling patterns compatible with ANSI/ASME Class 300. Exact dimensions vary by size and must be referenced from AWWA C228 standard tables.

At higher pressure ratings like 300 psi, flange thickness and bolt loading increase significantly. Beyond 48”, maintaining structural integrity, gasket sealing, and bolt stress becomes less practical, which is why larger diameters are typically handled with lower-pressure classes or alternative designs.

Not exactly.

AWWA C207 and AWWA C228 may share similar dimensional patterns in some sizes and classes, but they are different standards with different material specifications. C207 covers carbon steel flanges, while C228 covers stainless steel flanges, so interchangeability should always be confirmed by checking the exact dimensions, pressure class, and service requirements.

AWWA C207 covers carbon steel flanges, while AWWA C228 covers stainless steel flanges for the same applications. Both define dimensions, pressure classes, and material requirements.
