Surface Coating

What Are Epoxy
Coated Flanges

Epoxy coated flanges are steel flanges protected with Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating. This coating, sometimes referred to as “powder coating”, is a thermosetting epoxy powder that permanently bonds to the steel surface, establishing it as the industry standard for corrosion protection across pipelines, water systems, sewage networks, oil & gas facilities, power generation & utilities, marine & coastal environments, fire protection, and HVAC systems. It is applied to the entire surface of the flange.

Epoxy Coated Flanges

Corrosion Protection

FBE coating is commonly used in harsh environments where steel is exposed to saltwater, chemicals, and other corrosive elements. It provides effective protection for buried pipelines that face constant moisture and soil-induced corrosion.

Durability & Performance

Because this coating delivers strong resistance against corrosion, abrasion, and chemical exposure, it helps to extend the service life of flanges. It also reduces friction inside the pipeline, allowing for better fluid flow and minimizing wear over time. Furthermore, it enhances pipeline performance by reducing internal friction, improving fluid flow, and reducing component wear over time.

Sustainability & Compliance

Beyond durability, FBE coating is an environmentally friendly solution. The application process releases minimal to zero harmful emissions, making it a preferred choice for industries that value sustainability and compliance with modern environmental standards.

Coating Standards & Specifications

The standard for epoxy-coated flanges and pipe systems is AWWA C213-22 – Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coatings and Linings for Steel Water Pipe and Fittings. It describes the minimum requirements for materials, application, and testing of fusion-bonded epoxy coatings. It applies to steel water pipelines and fittings, including welded joints, connections, and special sections used in underground or underwater environments.

Fusion-bonded epoxies are heat-activated, chemically cured systems designed to provide long-lasting protection against corrosion and deterioration. The standard ensures consistent quality when FBE is applied to both the interior and exterior surfaces of steel water pipelines and fittings.

  • Steel water pipe and fittings
  • Welded joints and connections
  • Special sections and appurtenances
  • Underground and underwater pipeline applications
Typical application temperatures range between 350–500 °F (177–260 °C)
  • Surface Preparation – Steel surfaces are cleaned and heated.
  • Powder Application – An electrically charged epoxy powder is applied onto the hot surface.
  • Fusion Bonding – The powder melts and fuses into a smooth, continuous coating.
  • Curing – The result is a permanent, non-reversible bond that resists melting or breaking down even in extreme conditions.
  • 3-Layer Polyethylene (3LPE) Coating
  • Polyurethane (PU) Coating
  • Coal Tar Enamel (CTE) Coating
  • Zinc Coating

Each option provides different levels of corrosion and abrasion protection. Selection depends on fluid type, environmental exposure, and service conditions.

Applications of
Epoxy Coated Flanges

Epoxy-coated flanges are ideal for potable water pipelines, sewage treatment, and underground installations, because they resist constant moisture and soil exposure.

FBE coating provides strong chemical and abrasion resistance, protecting flanges used in oil and gas transmission lines against harsh hydrocarbons and corrosive substances.

Flanges exposed to saltwater and humid air benefit from epoxy coating, which prevents corrosion and extends service life in docks, offshore platforms, and coastal plants.

Used in power plants and processing facilities, epoxy-coated flanges maintain integrity in high-temperature, high-pressure, and chemically aggressive conditions.

Networks FBE-coated flanges ensure reliable performance in fire suppression piping and HVAC systems, where long-term corrosion resistance and safety are critical.

Epoxy Coated Flange Designs

awwa stainless steel ring slip on flange

Slides over the pipe and is welded at both the inner and outer diameters. Easier to install and align than weld neck, but suited for moderate pressure systems.

half inch thick stainless steel blind flange

Solid flange with no bore, used to seal the end of a pipe system or pressure vessel. Allows easy access for inspection or future expansion.

SS weld neck flange

Designed with a long tapered hub that is welded to the pipe, providing excellent strength and stress distribution. Ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.

Has a socket to insert the pipe before welding. Provides good flow characteristics and is used in small-bore, high-pressure lines.

threaded flanges

Features internal threads to connect with externally threaded pipes without welding. Common in low-pressure and non-critical applications.

ANSI class 300 stainless steel raised face slip on flange

Used with a stub end fitting. The flange itself does not touch the process fluid and can rotate around the pipe, making alignment and assembly easier.

Frequently Asked
Questions

They provide long-lasting corrosion resistance, are ANSI/ASME-compliant, and extend the service life of piping systems.

Oil and gas, water treatment, sewage, marine, fire protection, and industrial facilities.
Service life depends on thickness and environment, but epoxy coatings can last decades in properly maintained systems.
