Technical Specifications and Ratings

AWWA C228 Standard Overview

AWWA C228 is the modern standard governing stainless steel pipe flanges for water service, providing rigorous guidelines for design, materials, and dimensions in both potable and non-potable systems. By utilizing high-grade, corrosion-resistant alloys—primarily 304/304L and 316/316L—these flanges offer superior durability in chemically aggressive, high-salinity, or high-humidity environments. This makes AWWA C228 flanges the preferred specification for critical infrastructure such as desalination plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and marine applications where long-term material integrity is paramount.

Minimum Requirements for AWWA C228 Flange:

  • Materials & fabrication: The standard “provides minimum material requirements and dimensions for a variety of stainless-steel flanges (typically ASTM A240, 304/304L, 316/316L, or duplex alloys)”
  • Corrosion Resistance: High resistance to oxidation, salt spray, and various chemical environments, ensuring a long service life in aggressive conditions.
  • Performance: Pressure ratings are equivalent to C207. C228 covers Class SA (50 PSI)
  • Design basis: AWWA C228 – Stainless steel flanges for corrosive environments, 2″ – 72″ (smaller sizes available when compared to C207)
  • Common Applications: Desalination, chemical plants, wastewater, marine systems, food-grade systems
  • Interchangeability: for many sizes, AWWA ring-flange drilling (pressure classes SA,SB, SD and SE) aligns with ASME Class 150 patterns; F pressure class aligns with ASME Class 300.

AWWA C228 Class Working Pressures

The AWWA C228 standard covers stainless steel ring and blind flanges in sizes ranging from 2″ to 72″. Engineered for durability, these flanges are the preferred choice for corrosive, high-humidity, or chemically aggressive environments. While they maintain pressure ratings similar to their AWWA C207 carbon steel counterparts, they are uniquely designated with an ‘S’ prefix (e.g., Class SD or SE) to explicitly denote their stainless or alloy composition.

Class SA50 psi2″ to 14″Low-pressure, clean water
Class SB86 psi2″ to 60″Water distribution, general use
Class SD175 psi (1″–12″), 150 psi (14″–144″)2″ to 60″Treated water, wastewater
Class SE275 psi2″ to 72″Industrial water loops, tank connections
Class SF300 psi4″ to 48″Marine, chemical, high-pressure zones

Common AWWA C228 Flange Types

A Slip On Flange is a type of pipe flange that is slipped over the end of a pipe and welded in place.

A Blind Flange is a detachable sealing device used to block off a pipeline or to create a stop.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Frequently Asked
Questions

An AWWA flange is a type of pipe flange designed for waterworks service. It follows standards developed by the American Water Works Association and is typically used in municipal pipelines, treatment plants, irrigation systems, and other applications up to 300 psi.

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) provides two main standards for flanges for water-work applications:

  • AWWA C207 –  carbon steel flanges

  • AWWA C228stainless steel flanges

These standards also define dimensions, drilling patterns, pressure ratings, and material properties.

AWWA C207 covers carbon steel flanges, while AWWA C228 covers stainless steel flanges for the same applications. Both define dimensions, pressure classes, and material requirements.

Pressure ratings vary by class:

  • Class A: up to 50 psi (Stainless Steel Only)
  • Class B: up to 86 psi
  • Class D: up to 175 psi
  • Class E: up to 275 psi
  • Class F: up to 300 psi

These ratings apply to water service and depend on flange size and material.

API International stocks AWWA C228 flanges across multiple nominal pipe sizes, pressure classes, and material options to meet your project requirements. Our machine shop can also modify stock products to accommodate any special project requirements.
