ANSI/ASME Pressure Standard

B16.47 Class 300

At API International,  we support large-diameter ANSI/ASME B16.47 class 300 flange requests for NPS 26 to 60 inches, including blind and weld neck styles. Slip-ons, threaded, and socket weld flanges are not covered by ASME B16.47 and are instead manufactured to industry (non-ASME) standards. Our team can help confirm specifications, bolt patterns, and lead times for your project.

ANSI/ASME B16.47 Class 150 Specs & Dimensions

ANSI/ASME B16.47 Standard Overview

The ANSI/ASME B16.47 standard covers large-diameter steel flanges from NPS 26 through NPS 60. It defines requirements for pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and testing for blind and weld neck flanges. B16.47 includes pressure classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900.

Included in B16.47:

  • Blind flanges for closing off piping systems or isolating equipment
  • Weld neck flanges for large-diameter piping where strength and alignment matter
  • Series A and Series B dimensional systems, which are not interchangeable

Important note:

Slip-on, threaded, and socket weld flanges are not covered by ASME B16.47. When these styles are supplied in large diameters, they are generally manufactured to industry-standard, non-ASME dimensions that follow B16.47-style bolt patterns, but exact dimensions can vary by manufacturer.

ANSI/ASME B16.47 Series A vs Series B

ASME B16.47 includes two dimensional systems: Series A and Series B. They cover the same general size range, but the flange dimensions, bolt patterns, and overall proportions differ.

  • Series A is typically larger and heavier
  • Series B is generally more compact and lighter
  • The two series are not typically interchangeable because bolt circle and drilling dimensions differ

Class 300: Pressure Rating and Dimensional Basis

Class 300 is a higher pressure class within ANSI/ASME B16.47 for NPS 26 through 60 flanges. It is commonly used in large-diameter piping systems where service conditions require greater pressure capability than Class 150. Actual allowable pressure depends on the flange material and operating temperature, so the class designation should always be checked against the applicable pressure-temperature tables.

ANSI/ASME B16.47 Class 300 Flange Types

Blind flanges serve as the definitive endpoint for a piping system, used to terminate lines or isolate specific process equipment.

Weld neck flanges are a premier choice for high-pressure systems and remain one of the most commonly used flange types.

Frequently Asked
Questions

ASME B16.47 covers large diameter flanges from NPS 26 through 60 and includes pressure classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. Final allowable pressure depends on the selected material group and operating temperature, so always confirm using the B16.47 pressure temperature rating tables.

ANSI/ASME Class 300 refers to a flange pressure class used in piping systems under the ASME B16.5 standard. For example, a Class 300 flange made from ASTM A105 carbon steel is typically rated for about 740 psi at 100°F, though the actual pressure rating decreases as temperature increases.

Class 150 flanges are engineered for moderate pressure and temperature applications, while Class 300 flanges are built for more demanding service. Because Class 300 flanges require different dimensions and bolt patterns, they are not interchangeable with Class 150 components; these differences are critical for ensuring a reliable seal in high-stress industrial applications.

No.

Class 300 flanges are not interchangeable with Class 150 flanges because the bolt circle diameter, bolt quantity, and thickness are different.
