Notes: Dimensions per ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series A Class 300 (Table 33C), U.S. customary units. The same dimensions apply to carbon steel (ASTM A105) and stainless steel (ASTM A182, 304/304L or 316/316L). Minimum flange thickness does not include the raised face thickness. Bolt lengths shown are for raised face stud bolts (0.06 inch raised face) and do not include the height of the points; ring type joint (RTJ) versions use different bolt lengths. Blind flanges may be furnished with or without hubs at the manufacturer's option. Bolt hole and bolt diameters are shown in decimal inches (for example, 1.625 = 1⅝). ALL DIMENSIONS ARE IN INCHES UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED.

How to Read The Tables

asme b16 47 series a flange dimensions

Each table lists, per nominal size: outside diameter, thickness, bolt circle, number of bolts, bolt-hole size, bolt size, bore and approximate weight. Dimensions follow the governing ANSI/ASME and AWWA standards; weights vary by flange type and facing.

FAQs

What is the difference between ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47?

  • ASME B16.5 covers “standard” pipe flanges and flange fittings through NPS 24 (and includes the higher classes up to 2500, depending on size/material).
  • ASME B16.47 covers large-diameter blind and weld neck steel flanges from NPS 26 through NPS 60. ASME B16.47 covers pressure classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. Additionally, this standard features two dimensional series of flange configurations, Series A and Series B. Because these series have different dimensions, weights, and applications, they are not interchangeable.

What is the pressure rating for ANSI/ASME B16.47?

ASME B16.47 covers large diameter flanges from NPS 26 through 60 and includes pressure classes 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. Final allowable pressure depends on the selected material group and operating temperature, so always confirm using the B16.47 pressure temperature rating tables.

What is the difference between Series A and Series B flanges?

ANSI/ASME B16.47 is divided into Series A and Series B.

Key differences:

  • Bolt hole count
  • Bolt hole circumference
  • Thickness

Key Similarities:

  • Materials
  • Tolernaces
  • Pressure Classes

Do ANSI/ASME B16.47 Series B flanges require larger bolts?

Not usually.

Series B flanges typically use a smaller bolt circle and commonly use more bolts of a smaller size, while Series A flanges tend to use fewer bolts in larger sizes. Bolt size and quantity are defined by the standard for the specific NPS and class, so always verify the bolt pattern and hardware requirements per the specified Series and pressure class.

What is the bolt circle (B.C.) on a flange?

The bolt circle, also called the bolt hole circle (B.H.C.) or bolt circle diameter, is the diameter of the imaginary circle that passes through the centers of all the bolt holes. It sets where the bolts sit and must match the mating flange exactly, even when two flanges share the same outside diameter. Every dimension table lists the bolt circle along with the number and size of the bolt holes.

Do flange dimensions change with the material or finish?

No. The dimensions (outside diameter, bolt circle, bore, thickness and drilling) are set by the governing standard, ANSI/ASME or AWWA, and stay the same whether the flange is carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized, epoxy coated or painted. Material and finish affect corrosion resistance, pressure and temperature limits, and weight, but not the dimensional layout.
