Notes: Bolt and stud dimensions per ANSI/ASME B16.47, Series A and Series B, common to weld neck and blind flanges for a given size and class. Series A Class 150 and all Series B classes list a single raised face (RF) stud length; Series A Class 300 and above also list ring joint (RJ) stud length where the standard tabulates it, shown as — where a ring joint length is not published for that size. Series B uses a different, more numerous bolt pattern than Series A at the same class and size.

How to Read the Bolt & Stud Chart

Flanges and bolts, flange bolt chart
Each table lists, per nominal size: number of bolts, bolt diameter, and stud length. Stud length is measured face to face across the assembled joint, from below one nut to below the other, and is shown separately for raised face (RF) and ring joint (RJ) facings, since RJ stud runs slightly shorter.
Column glossary
No. bolts — count around the bolt circle
Bolt dia. — nominal shank diameter
Stud RF / RJ — length by facing
Machined bolt — through-bolt length

FAQs

What is the difference between ANSI/ASME B16.5 and ANSI/ASME B16.47?

ANSI/ASME B16.5 covers “standard” pipe flanges and flange fittings through NPS 24 (and includes the higher classes up to 2500, depending on size and material). ANSI/ASME B16.47 covers large-diameter blind and weld neck steel flanges from NPS 26 through NPS 60, in two dimensional series, Series A and Series B, which have different dimensions, weights, and bolting, and are not interchangeable.

What is the difference between Series A and Series B bolting?

Series A and Series B are two different drilling patterns for the same large-diameter flange sizes. Series B typically uses more, smaller-diameter bolts on a tighter bolt circle, while Series A uses fewer, larger bolts. The two are not interchangeable, always confirm which series your mating flange uses before ordering.

Do bolt and stud dimensions change with flange type or material?

No. Bolt count, bolt diameter, and stud length are set by the standard, series, and pressure class, and stay the same whether the flange is slip-on, weld neck, or blind, and whether it’s carbon steel or stainless. Material and flange type affect the flange itself, not the bolting.

What sizes does ANSI/ASME B16.47 cover?

ANSI/ASME B16.47 covers large-diameter flanges from NPS 26 inch through 60 inch, in both Series A and Series B, across several pressure classes. For recommended torque, see the Series A Class 150 Torque Chart.
