Notes: Bolt and stud dimensions per ANSI/ASME B16.5, common to all flange types (slip-on, weld neck, blind, threaded, socket weld) for a given size and class. Class 150 and Class 300 stud lengths are shown for raised face (RF) and ring joint (RJ) facings, along with machined through-bolt length for raised face. Class 400 and above are tabulated for machined bolts (raised face), male and female / tongue and groove facings, and ring joint, reflecting how ANSI/ASME B16.5 itself presents bolting at these higher classes. Where a value is not applicable for a given size, it is shown as —.

How to Read the Bolt & Stud Chart

Flanges and bolts, flange bolt chart
Each table lists, per nominal size: number of bolts, bolt diameter, and stud length. Stud length is measured face to face across the assembled joint, from below one nut to below the other, and is shown separately for raised face (RF) and ring joint (RJ) facings, since RJ stud runs slightly shorter.
Column glossary
No. bolts — count around the bolt circle
Bolt dia. — nominal shank diameter
Stud RF / RJ — length by facing
Machined bolt — through-bolt length

FAQs

What is the difference between a stud bolt and a machine bolt?

A stud bolt is threaded on both ends and fully threaded, and uses two heavy hex nuts, one on each side of the joint; it's the standard choice for most ANSI/ASME B16.5 flange assemblies. A machine bolt has a fixed head on one end and threads only partway up the shank, and is used less often on pressure flanges. This chart lists lengths for both.

Why does an ANSI/ASME B16.5 flange always have a bolt count that's a multiple of four?

ANSI/ASME B16.5 drilling is arranged symmetrically around the bolt circle so the pattern divides evenly into quadrants, which keeps clamping load even and lets the flange bolt up correctly regardless of rotational orientation. That's why every bolt count in this chart, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and so on, is a multiple of four.

Do bolt and stud dimensions change with flange type?

No. The same bolt count, bolt diameter, and stud length apply whether the flange is slip-on, weld neck, blind, threaded, or socket weld, for a given size and class. Only the stud length facing (raised face versus ring joint) changes the number, not the flange type.

What sizes and pressure classes does ANSI/ASME B16.5 cover?

ANSI/ASME B16.5 covers flanges from NPS ½ inch through 24 inch in seven pressure classes: 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.
