Notes: Torque values for full face homogeneous rubber gaskets in AWWA Class B and Class D flat face flanges, for ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs, applies to both AWWA C207 (steel) and C228 (stainless) flanges since both use the same drilling and bolt pattern. One table serves both Class B and Class D. Per AWWA C207 Table 1, compressed fiber (CFG) and PTFE gaskets are the preferred choice for sizes over 24 inch, and torque values are shown as N/A for 138 inch and 144 inch because larger sizes typically require initial assembly stresses beyond the maximum recommended for rubber gaskets to overcome hydrostatic forces in the pipe. Bolt stresses shown for the smallest sizes are low; vibration or thermal cycling can loosen bolts and cause gasket failure, so do not exceed the flange manufacturer's maximum recommended torque. Confirm torque with the bolt and gasket manufacturer before assembly.

How to Use the Torque Chart

Bolt tightening cross pattern, numbered order
Example: Cross (star) pattern, opposite bolt each step

Each table lists, per nominal size: gasket contact area, number of bolts, bolt size, and torque per bolt, a minimum to reach a safe seal and a preferred (maximum) value not to exceed. Bolts are typically brought to a snug fit, then tightened in the numbered cross pattern shown in the example image, in two or three passes, ending within the min/preferred range. This even sequence helps the gasket compress uniformly rather than over-stressing one side of the flange. Re-check torque once the system reaches operating temperature.

Column glossary
Contact area — gasket sealing surface
Min. torque — lowest safe value per bolt
Preferred torque — target, do not exceed

FAQs

Does this torque chart apply to AWWA C228 as well as C207?

Yes. Class B and Class D flanges use the same ASME/ANSI Class 150 bolt pattern whether they’re built to AWWA C207 (carbon steel) or AWWA C228 (stainless steel), so the same torque table applies to both standards.

How do AWWA C207 and C228 differ?

AWWA C207 covers carbon steel flanges, while AWWA C228 covers stainless steel flanges for the same applications. Both define dimensions, pressure classes, and material requirements; Class B and Class D share the same bolt pattern and torque values across both standards.

Are AWWA pressure ratings the same as ANSI/ASME flange Class ratings?

No. AWWA states its pressure ratings are for conditions and temperatures customary in water utility service, based on maximum operating pressure plus anticipated surge, for both C207 and C228. They are not ANSI/ASME-style pressure–temperature tables.

What bolt material are these values based on?

Unless noted otherwise, the torque values on this page are for ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs at 60,000 psi bolt stress. If your project specifies a different bolt grade, confirm the correct torque with your bolting or gasket manufacturer before assembly.
