NSF-Certified Flanges
(NSF-61 / NSF-372)

API International manufactures a full line of NSF-61/372 certified stainless flanges, including ANSI/ASME Class 150 and AWWA Class D & E configurations in dual grades 304/304L and 316/316L stainless steel. We can review any custom products to determine if they fall within the scope of our NSF listing. Every part is manufactured domestically and evaluated to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for health effects and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead content. These are the two standards nearly every U.S. state and Canadian province require for drinking water components.

What Makes a Flange
NSF-Certified?

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 are the two standards that determine whether a flange is permitted in a drinking water system. Together, they establish strict limits on chemical leaching and lead content, verified through independent laboratory testing and on-site facility audits rather than a manufacturer’s own claim.

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61

Health Effects

Evaluating Chemical Leaching

  • Governs chemical contaminants a product might impart to drinking water
  • Covers pipes, fittings, gaskets, and coatings under Section 4
  • Verified through simulated drinking-water contact testing
NSF/ANSI/CAN 372

Lead Content

How much lead is present

  • Verifies a maximum weighted-average lead content of 0.25%
  • Required alongside NSF-61, with limited exemptions
  • Codified by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act
VERIFIED, NOT DECLARED

Certification Process

Independently tested and audited

  • Independent lab testing and on-site facility audits
  • Maintained annually through ongoing surveillance
  • Verifiable in NSF's public certified-products database

NSF Certification Requirements

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 Requirements

  • Governs chemical contaminants and impurities products might indirectly impart to drinking water
  • Covers barrier materials, joining and sealing materials, mechanical devices, and pipes and related products, where flanges fall under Section 4
  • Overseen by a joint committee of 33 representatives, split evenly across public health, end-use, and industry expertise
  • 2024 edition adds expanded PFAS testing for fluoropolymer gasket and seal materials, compliance deadline January 1, 2028

NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 Requirements

  • Verifies a maximum weighted-average lead content of 0.25% (0.2% for solder and flux)
  • Required under the EPA's 2020 Final Rule enforcing the federal Safe Drinking Water Act
  • Calculated as a weighted average across every wetted surface in an assembly, not a single material spec check
  • Required alongside NSF-61 certification, with limited exemptions for specific non-potable products

The 7-Step Certification Path

  • Application, submission, and technical review of formulation and parts lists
  • On-site facility audit and laboratory extraction testing
  • Final technical evaluation, certification, and annual renewal thereafter

Certification vs. Compliance

  • Certification means an independent third party tested the product and audited the facility
  • A self-declared "compliant" claim carries no independent 3rd party verification behind it
  • Every certification is verifiable in NSF's public listings by manufacturer and product line

Where It Matters

Applications of
NSF-Certified Flanges

Any project where a flange sits inside a potable water system benefits from NSF-61/372 certification. In most states, it’s required rather than optional.
What are AWWA Flanges,

NSF-61 vs. NSF-372: What's the Difference?

The two standards are almost always required together, but they answer different technical questions.

NSF-61

Health Effects Scope

Evaluates the full range of chemical contaminants a product might leach into drinking water, not lead content specifically.

NSF-372

Lead Content Scope

Verifies a single, critical requirement: a maximum weighted-average lead content of 0.25%, the federal lead-free definition.

NSF-61/372

What Most Buyers Actually Need

With limited exemptions, products certified to NSF-61 must also meet NSF-372, which is why a genuinely certified flange carries both marks together.

49 U.S. States and 11 Canadian Provinces and Territories

U.S. States and Canadian Provinces and Territories have legislation, regulations, or policies requiring compliance with, or certification to, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for components that contact drinking water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a question about NSF-61/372 certification or how it applies to your project? Contact our team.

What does NSF-61/372 certification actually verify?

NSF-61 evaluates whether a product leaches contaminants into drinking water above acceptable levels. NSF-372 verifies the product's lead content meets the federal 0.25% weighted-average lead-free threshold. Both are required together in nearly every case.

Does NSF-61/372 apply to both ANSI/ASME and AWWA flanges?

Yes. Both flange families are evaluated to the same standards when built for potable water applications, regardless of whether they follow ANSI/ASME B16.5 or AWWA C207 dimensional specifications.

What materials are these flanges made from?

304L and 316L stainless steel, selected for corrosion resistance and compatibility with NSF-61/372 lead-content requirements.

Are these flanges manufactured domestically?

Yes. Every flange in the CleanLine product line is manufactured in the United States.

How can I verify a flange's NSF certification?

NSF maintains a public, searchable database of certified products and systems by manufacturer, product line, size, and material grade, so a certification claim can always be checked directly rather than taken at face value.
