Notes: This table is a reference sheet for weld neck bore sizes, and applies to ANSI/ASME B16.5 and B16.47 weld neck flanges. Bore size is the inside diameter for the given nominal pipe size and schedule; wall thickness is the pipe wall thickness that produces that bore. Some dimensions are not listed depending on the NPS and schedule per ANSI/ASME B16.5 and B16.47 specifications; where a value is not available, it is shown as —. Tolerances will be applied per ANSI/ASME B16.5 & B16.47 or other applicable standards.

How to Use the Pipe Schedule Chart

O.D. Bore Wall thickness
Example: pipe cross-section, outside diameter, wall thickness, and bore
Each table lists, per nominal pipe size: outside diameter, wall thickness, and the resulting bore size for the selected schedule, shown in the example image. Wall thickness is the pipe’s actual material thickness; bore size is what remains once that thickness is subtracted from the outside diameter, so a heavier schedule means a thicker wall and a smaller bore at the same nominal size. This is why two different schedules of the same nominal pipe size can require different weld-neck flange bores to match correctly. Confirm the pipe schedule prior to ordering, as an incorrect bore match can result in a misaligned weld joint.
Column glossary
Outside diameter — pipe O.D. for the size
Wall thickness — pipe wall for the schedule
Bore size — resulting inside diameter

FAQs

What is a weld neck flange?

A weld neck flange has a long, tapered hub that is butt welded to the pipe, spreading stress evenly and creating a strong, leak-resistant connection. It is the standard choice for high-pressure pipelines and critical process piping, which is why getting the bore right for the pipe schedule you're welding to matters.

What is the difference between wall thickness and bore size?

Wall thickness is how thick the pipe material itself is; bore size is the resulting inside diameter once that wall thickness is subtracted from the outside diameter. A thicker wall at the same nominal pipe size produces a smaller bore, which is why bore size shrinks as you move from a lighter schedule like 10 to a heavier one like XXH.

Which flange standards does this bore size chart cover?

This table covers ANSI/ASME B16.5 weld neck flanges through 24 inch and ANSI/ASME B16.47 large-diameter weld neck flanges from 26 inch up, since weld neck bore is set by matching pipe schedule rather than by the flange standard itself.

How is a pipe's schedule identified?

Pipe schedule is normally specified on project drawings, purchase orders, or pipe markings. When matching an existing weld neck flange to pipe already on hand, measure the pipe's actual wall thickness and compare it to the Wall Thickness column for the nominal pipe size to identify the closest schedule.

What tolerances apply to these bore sizes?

Tolerances are applied per ANSI/ASME B16.5 and B16.47, or other applicable standards, depending on the flange and application. This chart is a reference sheet for nominal bore size by schedule, not a substitute for the tolerance tables in those standards.
